Case studies from IPCC authors

Explore these examples of how IPCC authors are sharing insights from their work with different audiences in engaging, relatable and creative ways.

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) is the world’s leading body assessing the science related to climate change. Within this, the IPCC Working Group I authors focus on reviewing the physical science aspects. Climate Outreach was commissioned by the Working Group I Technical Support Unit (WGI TSU) to gather examples of how IPCC report authors from around the world are engaging with the public on these physical science elements of climate change.

Eleven of these stories are presented here as case studies – which illustrate how IPCC scientists are putting into practice the six principles for effective public engagement we identified for the WGI TSU in 2018. From interactive games with policymakers in the Caribbean to down-to-earth discussions amidst downpours in Colombia, explore how IPCC authors are engaging with audiences in their regions. These case studies are accompanied by a research paper published in the journal Climatic Change, Evaluating effective public engagement: local stories from a global network of IPCC scientists.

This work builds on our 2018 communications handbook for IPCC authors, as well as our curation of a photo library for the IPCC’s 1.5C Special Report communications strategy. Check out the handbook (available in English, Mandarin and Italian) and its accompanying webinar to learn more about the evidence-based principles for effective science communication.

Supporting IPCC Working Group I Communications – Project Background

For this project, we collected examples of public engagement work from 105 scientists from across all six of the IPCC regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, Southwest Pacific and North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

We evaluated this content to help the WGI TSU team identify how best to support and build on their authors’ public engagement efforts, empowering scientists around the world to confidently discuss the science of climate change and their wider work and experiences in different contexts.
